In the UK bingo has been very popular for centuries, but initially it was more of a local affair arranged by large groups of colleagues or friends and neighbours. However, entrepreneurs soon realised that they could make money out of organised bingo so UK bingo halls were born. The development of UK bingo halls was severely hampered by the law.

It was not until the 1960s that legislation catered for public gambling allowing bingo halls to be opened. UK bingo halls were often opened in very big buildings, such as cinemas and dancehalls that had fallen out of use. As a result, they were often very opulent and impressive halls.

At first you could not win a prize in UK bingo halls, but new legislation in 1968 made this possible, so the popularity of bingo soared. In the 1980s the National Game was introduced which allowed the prize money offered to soar into the thousands. A win on the bingo could make you rich a fact that enticed even more people to UK bingo halls.

UK bingo halls are now in decline and the smoking ban has finally led many bingo halls to close.
